Edible, Medicinal, and Poisonous Plants of the Front Range Rockies

Did you know that there are plants growing along creeks and hills in the Denver area that can be used to treat a toothache, help disinfect a wound, or make rope? 

Plant knowledge is crucial information for anyone who spends time outdoors from the amateur hiker to the professional ecologist. Your nature experience is enriched when you can find and identify useful plants growing all around you. In fact, this knowledge could be used to save your life. 

Spend a full day finding, identifying, sampling over one hundred edible, medicinal, poisonous (don’t sample these), tool making, and smokable plants that grow everywhere in the Denver Front Range. 

Please bring: 
-Weather appropriate clothing
-Leather gloves
-Pocket knife
-Camera
-Notebook and pen
-One liter or more of water
-A bag lunch or money to go out to lunch
-A sense of adventure 

We will break for lunch at midday and change locations. There will be an opportunity for a short nature-connection meditation and a cordage making workshop before we begin the second half of the course.

Cattail Bob Seebeck has been teaching outdoor education classes since 1975 with an emphasis on ethno-botany and wilderness survival. He has taught for such institutions as The Colorado Division of Wildlife, Rocky Mountain National Park, Denver Botanic Gardens and the U.S. Air Force Academy. Cattail has conducted intensive multi-week survival treks, overnight field trips and simple day outings for over 10,000 students in 38 years. His new book, “Survival Plants of Colorado”, featuring 214 wild herbs and 856 color photographs, is the “go to” textbook for wild useful botany classes in colleges throughout Colorado. Cattail Bob has been a guest on local television and radio as well as NBC’s The Today Show. Cattail currently lives in a self-built passive solar cabin on 7 acres near Drake, Colorado.
